    C2 Console Restore Question

I am restoring a C2 console I picked up on EBay for a good price. There were some minor scratches on the top plate and the ashtray door so I picked up a rebuild kit from one of the major vendors (see pic). The ashtray door pull with three pins sits nicely through the holes in the door, and sits, and sits. I can't figure out how to fasten it there. (The original pull was riveted via the two outer pins.) I really don't wish to start banging on those two pins to mushroom them for fear of denting or breaking something. Or is that how it's done? Is it time for a couple of dabs of JB Weld? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    C2 Console Restore

    Paul,

Yes, the two outer pins on teh ashtray door knob are meant to be peened over. I haven't done my console yet, but I'm told that a center punch will work well.

Hang on Paul.... I've done a few 63's and

The nylon sliders and door need to be installed into the console first. Otherwise you won't be able to put it back in later.

When you have the door in, flip the assy upside down and support the knobs upper edge on something very solid (like a bucking bar or a chunk of steel). To prevent marring the knob, put a soft cotton cloth between the knob and the support.

To start the expansion of the two hollow rivet nubs on the knob, use a center punch first. When you have a good flare started, finish up with the round end of a small ball peen hammer. There is actually a hollow rivet set tool availible, but I don't know where to get one.

You want a helper to support the console as you will have your hands full tring to hold the knob and secure it in place without a screw up.

          good luck,
          tc

Cut off an old push rod and...

the ball end makes a swell rivet setting tool!
