Re: using jack stands
Ken, if you plan to work under your car, it is not a good idea to have it up only on jack stands. See posts on this forum archives on this subject. If when your car is sitting on all four tires you can not slide under it with space to spare, you do not want to be under it when it is up on jack stands alone.
Work safely,

Re: using jack stands
If you buy cheap stamped-steel jackstands, yes. If you buy the really good ones, you should be fine.
However, in my old age (slower reactions at getting out from under) and having other inexperienced people around the garage who could do something nearly fatal, I like tossing a 255/60-15 tire on the rim under the low spot near where I am working. That should be enough to keep it off of me. I might get caught or pinned, but not crushed.
If the tires are on it, the ramps under the tire give a bit of security.
The real trick is ALWAYS give the car a real hard push and pull before getting under. While any of us would hate to drop our cars on a jackstand and poke a hole through the floor, we would hate even more to poke a hole through us.- Top
