Understanding the Corvette Insignia

My son asked me the other day what the Corvette insignia stood for, particularly the "fleur de le" or whatever it is called. I could not answer him and started looking through all my documentation including my Corvette coffee table books but had no luck. Perhaps someone can enlighten me?
