    C3 72 Caliper Casting #'s

A short background. I am the original owner of a 72 coupe that has never been damaged or altered. It was in storage for a while and I have recently re-activated my membership in NCRS from the late 80's As the car is over 30ys old & I am over 50yrs old, we can't rely on memory. So I've gone through the car and confirmed all #'s on anything I can find #'s for match. I ordered the 4th edition of the tech/judges manual but it's not in publicatin yet. They are out of the 3rd edition. I would like to find the casting #'s for the calipers. I understand that the C3's went through 3 designs... and lucky me,,, it was during 72 that they moved to the third design. My production date is November 71, purchsed January 72. Is there any other source out there that is dependable to get those #'s ? Thanks in advance for any help out there!!!!!

There were actually only TWO caliper DESIGNS---the 1st design used from 1965 through early 1967 and the 2nd design used from E67 through 1982. FUNCTIONALLY, all 2nd design calipers are the same. However, there were TWO sets of castings used for the 2nd design calipers. The change occurred sometime during the 72-73 period. My feeling is that it probably occurred in mid to later 1972. It may have been a "phased in" sort of thing, too. Since the 1st and 2nd set of castings are completely interchangeable, it may be that some cars in the transition period had caliper half castings from both series.

Anyway, I would think that your early 1972 model would have had the first series of caliper castings and, mostr likely, exclusively the first series. These castings are as follows:

    front---castings #5452273 and 5452270

    rear----castings 5452284 and 5452281

Thanks Joe for clearing up the confusion between designs and different castings as well as for the #'s. Is it correct to assume the #'s didn't change from front/left to front/right and same for the rear. Thanks again!!

Regardless of the sets of casting numbers (i.e. 1st design, early 2nd design and late 2nd design) there were only 2 casting numbers used for the front and 2 casting numbers used for the rear. From these CASTINGS, however, several different FINISHED PART NUMBERS were manufactured. The finished part numbers are nowhere to be found on the castings. For the fronts, the outers were the same for each side. The inners were specific to the left and right side. For the rears, each caliper half was a different finished part number.
