    Rear Y Exhaust hanger C3

    To corvette people,

Run into a problem installing new exhaust system on my 1975 (C3)corvette. Pipes are on and added front hanger next to trans. But now need to hang rear Y-pipe right where it joins the converter. I have nothing there, looked at corvette assembly manual shows hanger there but no one makes it. If I could get my hands on one I could make one (even a old rusted one) but no luck so far. So do any of you experts know how I can get old one or have any idea how to use universal hangers to make one? Please send idea or something my vett is sitting and waiting on me. Any comments welcome and thanks.

    Guy-----

This converter hanger bracket, GM #356956, was a one-year-only part and that one year was 1975. So, it likely would not have a lot of interest generated by the restoration market. It was discontinued by GM in November, 1988.

I'd contact Pacific Corvette of Puyallup, WA (www.pacvette.com). They have a very large inventory of used Corvette parts all catalogued by original part number. They may have exactly what you're looking for in a good, serviceable used piece.

...as many '74-'82 Corvettes that I've judged over the last 7yrs or so, and I judge "chassis" 90% of the time, I can't remember what is so different on a "1975 only" rear hanger that you could not use a '76-'79 style one. I'm sure the '75-'79 exhaust was virtually the same. Maybe even up to '82. I remember "most" of them just being two "rubber" straps(looked like old tire material)which bolted on the rearward face of the crossmember just ahead of the differential. At the bottom end there appeared to be a piece of angle iron or steel with a round part cut into it for the top half of the exhaust pipe. The "bottom" piece was kinda of a crude looking two inch wide "metal strap" that went around the pipe-can't remember if this at the connection of the converter and the rear "Y" pipe or just around the rear pipe itself. Could be also how the converters were "clamped" or bolted in 1975 vs the '76-'82 cars. However it is, I'm sure a '76-'82 style rear hanger could be easily fabbed up and look original.

        Paul------

The design of the 75-only hanger bracket is quite a bit different than the 76-78 hanger, GM #357781, and the 79-82 hanger, GM #459081. The latter 2 are fairly similar but considerably different from the 75 piece. It may very well be possible to functionally adapt the later brackets to a 1975, though. Based on the differences in design, however, I don't think that it would be possible to make a 1975 bracket out of a later one.

The 357781 bracket is discontinued. However, the 459081 is still available for about 60 bucks, GM list.

Joe, thanks for the response I will try the pacvett people. Your response was great, and I do appreciate your attention to the question. I have a alternate method and that is use a 1978 top mount. I have to drill into the frame work to mount the bolt very tough angle, then look for a bottom mount plate. By the way everyone has stopped making it so again have to fab one. Hope pacvett has a originial one. Will let you know if you like, take care and again THANKS.

Paul, thanks for the response I appreciate it. But I have tried the 76-79 option and the mounting bolts in 75 are different and require additional modification to be used due to the mounting of the bolts that hold the catalitic converter shield are on the opposite side of the frame. I will figure something out thanks again for the response.
