69 big block balancer numbers?

I've run this through the archives and want to check my understanding of it with ya'll. The raised cast numbers on the back of the hub on the balancer I pulled off my '69 L36 are irrelevant as they are the number for the hub component and not necessarily associated with my particular car model, right? (the number is, BTW, 388080) I can't find any other numbers on the balancer, and that's also possible for an original part, right? I'm thinking that if there's no way to verify whether or not the part's original to the car, it's probably a waste of money to rebuild it.

If there are any identifying numbers on a balancer, they will be STAMPED numbers on the face of the balancer. These will be the last 4 digits of the part number. Most balancers don't have them, though. If it's a 7" balancer, it may very well be original to the car.

No matter, though. The original balancer is still available from GM under GM #3860008. It costs about 300 bucks, GM list. I doubt that this balancer is dicernably different from the original. However, you may be able to same some money by having the one you have rebuilt.

you may want to consider aftermarket

There are several aftermarket suppliers for the balancers like Pioneer I think, they sell for about $75 to $100 (check with your machinist). The center hub is covered by the pulley, so as long as the ring looks the same, it should pass judging.
