    Vent window glass removal

I looked in the archives. I am getting my vent window assy. ready to ship out for plating. I need to carefully remove it's glass without chipping/breaking the original glass. Should I first run a sharp knife along the sides between the glass and liner first. Then carefully clamp onto glass with rubber padding between glass and clamp and tap out with a hammer. Any experience/tips with this? Thanks! Dick Gutman

    Dick -

If you are dealing with a factory assembly, you'll just have to be patient, pulling and gently prying at the ends using plastic or wooden tools. I have done this numerous times on C2's. There is enough flex in the frame that will allow you to peel it back a bit. The glass is held in by the pressure against the window seal alone.

However, if Bubba has gotten there ahead of you and squeezed gobs of hi-tech silicon into the frame to help hold it, it becomes a whole new and very ugly ballgame.

    Best of luck!

(is there any chemical out there that will soften / dissolve silicon sealant!?)

Thanks for the tips. I don't think Bubba lives in New Jersey, where this car came from. Then again, he seems to be everywhere a cheap fix is needed. Thanks Dick Gutman

I found out the hard way that gasoline will disolve silicone sealant. The guy that started the restoration on my 67 coupe used silicone to attach the filler neck to the gas tank. It wasn't a problem until the 1st time I filled the tank for storage. The following year I ended up with sealant looking like little worms in the tank, fuel lines, fuel pump and even squeezed by the filter at the carb.
