i just purchased a 69coupe 427/400hp. i noticed that it has a ballast resistor on the firewall. did 69 cars come with a resistor? i have seen on other cars where people have added this item especially when electronic ignition has been added. this car still has stock distributor, but does have one of those big accel distributors. if this was added later, could that be the reason? do i need it?? thanks, rick

Re: ballast resistor question
Rick-----
No 1969 Corvette was ever manufactured with a ballast resistor. The ballast resitor function was incorporated into the coil low voltage wires (the whitish fabric insulated ones). However, ballast resitors are required for use with some aftermarket "high performance" coils. When you said "big accel distributor" I presume you mean COIL. If so, that's why there is a ballast resistor installed. It did not originally reside there, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: ballast resistor question
Take a close look at how the system was installed, it could be some numbskull did not realize the resistor is integral to the factory wiring, and you may have two in series, factory resistance wire in the harness + external (not good) unless they used a direct feed to the added resistor.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: ballast resistor question
WELL...i looked at it closer tonight, and they did use the original resitor wire and the ballast resistor. i am going back to original config, now my question is this....since they spliced into original resistor wire, how critical is the length of this wire?? thanks bill and joe, rick- Top

Re: ballast resistor question
It's critical, but a couple of inches will not matter.Bill Clupper #618- Top
