    C2 inner fender dust shields

My '64 Roadster was judged a few weeks ago at a local NCRS chaper event.... I was "dinged" several points because my original dust shields (over the A-arms)are broken and the "original" staples on one extend over the edge of the shield and on to the inner fender liner. Obviously, some guy on the assembly line in St. Louis 42 years ago was having a bad day and missed his target with the staple gun.

I am going to replace the shields. Would you use the "original" staple holes and take the point deductions or create new holes that are neat and uniform along the edge of the shield?

My preference is to use the original holes....juding be dammed

    Thoughts....?

    Garry,

What kind of points deduct did you take? Just a couple of points, I'm guessing? If so, I would keep it original and take the hit, so long as you can live with the small points deduct. There's history in those sloppy staple holes.

Restore means to put it back like it was... If you're convinced those are the factory original splash sheilds and the original retaining staples, install the replacement shields exactly as the originals were positioned.

Take a photograph of the originals and the next time you're having your car judged and there's any question about the postition of the staples do the following:

During the owner debrief, have your original picture available and explain to the judges that you had a choice: put it back like it was, or make it different/better than it was. In my experience, that's pretty much a clincher argument for judges....

I took a 4 point hit (2/originality and 2/condition) out of 6 possible points.... it seems rather high

          Rather high, but

          Garry,

4 points out of 4500 is not a big deal, unless you are right on the border between flight awards.

i have several midyears that were stapled such as you describe. Bubba was working the line that day. install your new shields like the originals were stapled. doubt you'll take a hit for the staple placement--am certain you wouldn't if i were judging it. mike

Sounds like inexperienced judges to me. -2 for originality??? Maybe -2 for condition but then, I haven't seen them and their condition may be 1/3???

Like Mike said, "install your new shields like the originals were stapled. doubt you'll take a hit for the staple placement". You wouldn't from me either.

Leave them as original. The next time the judges probably won't say anything. I just had my '66 flight judged this past weekend because I wanted a higher ranking score, just for my satisfaction. I got hit with points on items that were ok 2 years ago and things that were hit 2 years ago that I had not corrected were ok this time. All depending who is judging and their expertise. They all do a good job as far as I am concerned. My 2 cents
