    70-72 rear carpet

This is a whole new world for me--62's don't have rear carpet--but this 71 I'm working on should have. Am I right that the carpets over the wheel wells (convertible) were just carpet that was glued to that preformed tarpaper-like material? The reproduction has a jute back, and seems to be much bulkier than it should be. The carpet was out of this car when I got it, but the preformed hard stuff is still there.
Does it work best to peel the jute off the carpet and then glue the carpet to the preformed hard material? How do you do that on these ultra-modern cars?
    Thanks in advance.

    Mike,

I don't have a convertible, but on my 2 coupes the carpet does not have a jute backing, and it does just lay up against that preformed tar like cardstock material on the rear wheelwells. It is this way for standard interiors(loop style carpet), not sure if custom interiors(cut pile carpet) is the same.

I removed the backing off of mine and replaced it with a "heat-resistant" foil backed material, I bought at Home Depot. Not NCRS....but alot cooler.

      Measure twice...cut once.

      Good Luck! Dave

I am currently re-carpeting my '70 convertible. I left the original sound deadener intact when I removed the original cut pile carpet which also had the jute backing attached. Not only am I leaving the sound deadener in but I am also installing heat foil with juting over that and installing the new carpet with the jute backing. The sides won't matter much as they are preformed but there will be some extra effort, shall I say, to get the floor/rear bulkhead piece to fit uniformly and allow enough for the rear compartment unit.
