Re: Hardened Seats or NOT????
My father-in-law was a research PhD with Standard oil who was involved heavily with the introduction of the catylitic converter. He recalls that AMOCO oil out of Texas city had a no-lead white gas. I guess AMOCO bought Standard Oil at some point. He said that the TEL lubricating properties definately protected valves and that the white gas had some aeromatic hydrocarbons which in lieu of the TEL added in valve lubrication. Todays unleaded is absent of these aeromatic hydrocarbons. He confirmed that Ford published some data which supported the notion that there is a longer-term conditioning effect of TEL. The notion of occasionally using some LL racing gas or AV gas periodically could possibly help valve and seat life. Lastly he seemed to recall that modern day metalurgy of valves also extends valve life with unleaded fuel.
I have spoke with several builders, and true to form, most favor the hardened seats. go figure.. At this point I will redirect the $200 to hopefully something of real value....like my kids education fund...or NOT.
Thanks to all the contributers!
