1964 Corvette - Need Quick Response.

    I could really use help verifying "matching numbers" on a 1964 convertible. D16 STYLE 64 867 ---- 4201 BODY TRIM 898KA ------ 912AA PAINT

    Chevrolet DD

    40867 S107178

    Number on engine: 4107178 F0924RE

This car had been restored 10 years ago. Will eventually need a paint job. Nice interrior, 160K miles. One thing that makes me nervous about this car is that the original DD plate with the VIN number has been popped of and a new one spot-welded in its place. At least it looks newer than the trim plate and the original rivits are not there but seems as thought it's spot-welded. Also the numbers on the engine 4107178 seem to be slightly different from F0924RE. The owner has told me that the person he bought it from said it was a "correct" car with matching numbers. If anyone could tell me what a approximate price range would be for this car, that would be great. Also other than what I have mentioned the car is immaculate in, out, and underneath.

Could use a quick response, Thanks very much Matt. (hopeful future vette owner.)

Matt --- Sounds like you're looking at a silver blue '64 convertible with blue leather interior; body trim tag installed November 16, 1963; 4201st '64 convertible body produced. Engine is 327 cu.in. / 340 hp, assembled (and stamped RE) at Flint Michigan on September 24th 1963, and belonging to the 7178th '64 Corvette produced, which corresponds with the VIN plate. The VIN # derivative on the engine pad was stamped at St.Louis, with a different (smaller) font.

All '63 and '64 VIN plates were spot welded, rather than riveted. Late '63 and all '64 VIN tags have rounded corners.

From what you described, all seems to be in order, but don't purchase it on my say-so. If we're talking big $$$, suggest you get someone who has seen many cars (like a NCRS judge) to go over it with you.

Matt, slow down before you buy. I'll give you info and hopefully some that own a 64 can reply with better info. My info is from the corvette black book. I recommend you getting one.867=conv,898KA=blue/leather,912=silver blue paint, suffix RE=365hp 327 w/mt.I'm not sure even though I did race a 64 conv.over 30 years ago but I thought I had just in the last couple weeks read from a 63/64 owner that those years the vin plate was spot welded. You'll have to find out this one on your own from a member who owns a 63/64 but I thought I read something like that.pTry posting 63/64 vin plates "spot welded or rivets". As for the price,If no other members can help you on that call pro-team corvettes tomorrow 1-888-592-5086 or look up the prices on their 64s web site www.proteam-corvette.com also check out www.hemmings.com. prices for 64s. Good luck,GRR#33570.
