Aviation gasoline is NOT racing gasoline

I've been advising FI owners, especially those with '57 - '62 units, to use pure racing gas to eliminate fuel boiling in the spider at idle. This is because racing gas has a 50% boil-off minimum of about 210 degrees F. Modern pump gas has a 50% boil-off minimum of 150 or 170 degrees depending on the time of year.

Some folks have interpreted my advice to mean aviation gas will prevent percolation. It will not. It has the same low boil-off temps as pump gas.

I have been running aviation fuel in my '60 FI for many years with no boiling problems (it has been driven on very hot days). When I put a kit in it a few years ago (first in many years) the fuel bowl was very clean. Maybe I have been lucky but aviation fuel is easier to get and cheaper. Don H.

I don't know about the boiling point etc of avgas, but I do know one thing, it is slow burning. When I asked about it for my autocross car, the response was the aviation fuel is designed for engines that turn about 2500-3000 rpm. In our case where we are most often above that and near our 7000 redline, it burns too slow. So, if you want performance, use racing gas. In most cases, you can probably split it 50/50 with premium pump gas without any ping. I use 110 leaded octane and mix with premium Chevron or 76 without any problems. If you use a lot of it, or have friends who will use it too, get the 55 gallon drum, as it's much cheaper. Keep it capped and it's pretty safe too, although I do have mine in a seperate garage away from the house.

Avgas isn't cheap. 100LL was $3.99/gallon at the FBO at the Williamsport Pennsylvania airport last week. It's similiarly priced at other airports in the Northeast.

I have 2 fuels in my area 100 Octane which you can pump into car and 110 which you have to put in containers.Does the 110 have lead in it is this why you can't put it in the car. It is Sunoco would this be 210 boil off.

              Re:Race Gas Av Gas

Guys maybe Iam lost but I thought race gas the higher the octane the slower it burns. I use 100 low lead av in my big blocks and all my cars because they sit and it does gum up the carbs or the FI units. The race boat guys all use it, they sell it at the marina, thats were I get it. Its cleaner and wont leave deposits in the fuel system. Phil 8063
