    '67 Steering Gear Box Color...

The latest edition of the NCRS Judging Manual states "The steering box is a natural finish casting or possibly painted black". There is a certain ambiguity in this statement that I don't like.

I'm up on the fence on this one, knowing that I could possibly get a point deduction for the black color or lack thereof....maybe depending if the Mechanical Judge likes what's for lunch or not.

I have a very late July '67 car. Anyone care to take a shot at this? What were the '68's, painted black or natural? Thanks. PT

Patrick, I had mine natural and got a deduct for some corrosion. Decided to take advantage of the judging guide and painted it black. Easier to keep clean. I also found this photo of a supposed 6600 mile original car and the box is black. The rest of the car appears to be original so I believe it.

Patrick, I believe that mid years are like the 68-72's. Documented original cars have been seen with natural and with painted gear boxes. Takes yer pick.

Thanks guys, the '67 I helped judge last week at Tony's Corvette Shop was a 33k mile car, was mostly original and the steering box was black and it got zero deduct. I'll try natural, since the Judging Manual seems to imply that natural is the most widely accepted and just some were painted black. Thanks again, PT

            I also should add that...

in three weeks I will be at the Mason-Dixon Judging Meet. I'm told that there will be 14 (yes, 14) '67's there for Flite Judging. I will do a survey at that time and then make a decision. Bet they're all 435's.

I also heard a story about a Judge who was working with an Observer Judge and he saw something on a particular car which was dead wrong and told the Observer Judge that he was going to deduct points. The Judge had had a long day, it was getting late and the Observer Judge asked him how many points he was going to deduct.

The Judge took a deep breath and sighed, looked up at the clock on the wall and it was 2 o'clock. He then turned to the Observer Judge and said "two points".

Keith, WOW, your father must have one of those RARE,virtually non-existent, BIG BLOCK DELETE cars!!! Stop the presses! Surely you'll be writing an article for the Restorer this summer.
