What is the proper height of the bellhousing ball stud for a 3858403 bellhousing, to be used in a 1965 car. I removed the old, incorrect bellhousing (3899621, used 1970 and later), which had a 3/4" high stud with a flat bottom. Just got a real nice 403 bellhousing with a 1 1/8" high stud with a round bottom. Also, is a 10 spline, 10.4" clutch the right one for 1965 327/365. Joe

Re: Ball Stud For 3858403 Bellhousing
Joe-----
With respect to 1955 to 1981 Corvettes, there were only two ball studs ever used . 1955 thru 1965 models used ball stud #3729000 which is a 1-1/2" long stud. 1966 through early 1975 used stud GM #3887159 which is a 1-3/8" long stud. Later 1975 to 1981 Corvettes went back to the GM #3729000 1-1/2" stud. The 3887159 stud is now discontinued and replaced by the GM #3729000 stud. So, the short answer to your question is that your 1965 originally used and requires the 1-1/2" GM #3729000 stud which is still available from GM for a list price of $9.40/ each.
Your 1965 Corvette with 327 cid engine should use the 10.4" 10 spline clutch. This clutch, with respect to pressure plate and friction disc, is GM-discontinued, but available in the aftermarket from many sources. The '403' bellhousing will only accomodate a 10.4" clutch; the '444' or '621' are required for an 11" clutch.
By the way, the GM #3899621 bellhousing was used from 1967 to 1981. For 1967 and 1968 it was used only for Corvettes with 427 cid engines. Thereafter, it was used for all Corvettes with manual transmission. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
