    67 BB starter

Their seems to be a "dead" spot on a starter motor on a 67 427 I am thinking of buying. The seller said he sometimes has to wait for a short time to start if it is in this spot. (I know my description is vague). It is probably original. who do you suggest I send it to?
Does one have to be a great mechanic to take off & put on?
    Thanks, Don

    Re: 67 BB starter

Well I'm no "Great Mechanic" and I've taken off my starter.
Access is the key! There are several companies / people that can rebuild the starter if that is the problem. I've had good service from "American Armature"
    and Chicago Corvette.

    Cheers,

    steve

        Don,

You really don't need a "corvette" guy to rebuild your starter. You can find a local shop in your area. If your starter is original, just make sure they understand you want "yours" back, and not exchanged with another rebuilt unit. If the solenoid needs to be replaced, and the cap is original, you can put it on the new solenoid. If you want it actually restored to NCRS specs, by all means send it to John Pirkle.

          Don,

If like most of us, you'll be crawling under your car to remove the starter, with limited access, use the cradle on a hydraulic jack to help support the starter when removing it, and positioning it when installing it. It's pretty heavy. Make sure you tighten the two bolts that hold the starter to the block before you attach the small support bracket at the front.

AS he said (if it stops on a dead spot) dead is dead you don't just get up and walk away. Same with that starter(armature) ,there may be a BAD connection (elect) that is why it will start after it cools down when it was in the Corvette.. You can check it out by seeing if the armature turns over by, by passing the solenoid, ground the case then touch hot post of the case only ,keeping redoing that and if the armature turns over every time it don't have a dead spot. Hope I made this clear how to check it out.

              Re: 67 BB starter

Fixing this is not a big deal ,parts are not a lot of money, if you want it restored you should have it sent to a restorer ($150.00 John Pirkle) or if you do not care about correct dates you can buy a replacement at any part store for less than $50.00.
Installation is very easy, if you are not mechanically inclined, you can take it to any repair shop, it should not cost that much.

                Re: 67 BB starter

Most replacement big block starters will not have the correctly configured nose. I went through that process with my '67 big block. The replacements I found did not have the correct bolt hole alignment in the cast iron nose. Maybe a small block is different, but it's not that easy to find a big block replacement starter that will bolt directly on as the original did, through the bellhousing cover.
