I could be wrong, but I think it could be a ticket to the race "festival"
Not exactly sure what a 78 pit pass looked like, I would venture a guess they were tags with strings that would tie to your clothing. When I had one in 94 it was displayed by wearing it around your neck, and was plastic.
The race is a month long event in Indianapolis, with all sorts of associated events, socials, festivals, you name it.- Top

Re: 78' pace car pit pass??
As a Hoosier native, I am quite familiar with 500. I grew up literally within earshot of the track. Gary is correct, the 500 is a month long event. There is an actual 500 festival, which is highlighted by a parade through downtown Indianapolis. This appears to be a ticket for that festival. I've been fortunate to have had a few pit passes over the years, and they are cards inside a plastic sleeve with a string that you wear around your neck. You are required to keep it on at all times you are in the pit area (among other rules). The pit passes are printed "pit pass" in bold letters, so they are unmistakeable.- Top
