    Delco starter

Were Delco starters made in Indiana and Canada? I HAVE A 1108427 0C21 - March 20, 70 - made in Canada starter on my dec 70 built 71. I know it is out of the time frame of six months, but it came on the car when I bought it (ten years ago), is correct in every other way by the JG. The guy I bought it from owned it for 13 years and he said he never touched it. He would not have put it on for correctness. It had 78 seats and 78 alum rims on it when I got it.

    Thanks

    Re: Delco starter

    Chas,
For what it is worth -- back when I was team leader we encountered an early 1971 with a McKinnon built starter. Much like yours, the car was not in the hands of the original owner, but the dates are exactly the same as yours. Was your car built E14? I guess we will have to determine if we have a survey of one or two.

      Terry,

Yes. My car is an E-14, S/N 3932. The starter does say "Delco Remy" with "made in Canada" under it. So you think that it may be the original starter?
Is a McKinnon a Canadian starter? I don't ever remember seeing McKinnon stamped on the starter.

        Post-strike cars

I've been interested in the post-strike 71's for a few months now. With the first cards being built Nov. 24 after a 2-month strike, most dates are August and September on my Nov. 25th LT-1.
Now, the LS-5 that I'm helping with, with E11 (Dec. 11) body build date is a tired but pretty much unmolested car and has the screw-in oil filler cap on the right side. NO big deal to me, except that car is # 3693, and appears to have 57K miles on it. On ebay, ending today, is #3703 with 59K miles, unmolested for the most part, and with a screw-in oil filler on the right valve cover. I find that all very interesting. Not trying to hype that the screw-in cap was used, but wondering--two very original cars, 10 apart, with that cap.

            Re: Post-strike cars

I recall a lot of weird things on early 1971 Mark IV motors from back when I was team leader. Some of the most unusual stamp pads are on those examples. It used to give me fits. Maybe the strike had something to do with it. You and Chas may be on to something.

              Terry,

My car also is a V1201 CJK. Most of the parts on my car, things the St Louis plant, I beleive would add onto it are dated Aug-Sept date coded. My car was a pretty neglected car. When I decided to go for top flight was after I kept decovering (after my plant manager gave me a 2nd JG and reading constantly) that other than the color and seats, it was very original. It has been TF 3 times. Thats one of the reason that I think the starter is the original one.

McKinnon Industries was the Canadian version of the US Allied parts Group, Made batteries, radiators, cranking motors, alternators, and who knows what else. A wholly owned division of GM Canada.
