    Over-retracted shoulder belts

I'm trying to help a not-terribly-mechanical friend with a 71 coupe. (I know, that's the blind leading the blind). His shoulder belts are fully retracted and we've had no luck with the minimal tug-and-hope-they-release program.
If we do remove them from the car, what kind of trick does it take to get them to release appropriately. Or will it be obvious once I've removed them?
    Thanks!

removal won't solve the problem. i've never had luck repairing the critters. you might try 4 or 5 laps around the rosary beforehand. mikie

My shoulder harnesses did the same thing. I simply fetched them a good rap upside the head (knocking the little latch piece free) after removal and all was right with the world. No disassembly required.
