    Fuel sending unit

I am in need of a fuel sending unit for a 1963 SWC project. I will most likely be purchasing an after market. Could some one please recommend the best unit to purchase?

    Ray,

Get the OE one if you want one to last. The foreign repro ones have a different variable resistor contactor and are more cheaply made. Parts are not interchangeable with the original. I found that the repro's last about 6 to 9 months before something goes haywire.

The OE ones are expensive ($220 or more). If your original is in fair shape, it can be restored. There's a Restorer story on them and some posts within the last year.

          Re: Here's a thread

I have looked through the Restorer index for the past four years for the article on fuel sending unit restoration with no luck. Would anyone know what volume this article would be in.

          Thanks for any help!

              Ray,

It was about 2 years ago, but it was for a C3 with the sender at the top of the tank. But the same restoration principles apply.

                Thanks Again Ray

                  Re: Fuel sending unit

I have used several repros with sucess. The unit on my 66 PFI car is at least three years old with no problems. Originals aint bullit proof either. Keep in mind that the midyear units are of a different type than the C3s and the resistor wiring conections are different. The resistor unit will not directly interchange.

                    Re: Fuel sending unit

                    Ray -

The midyear fuel sending unit was a 5-year "experiment" with a 3-wire 12V-powered voltage-divider circuit sender, never used anywhere else except some 60's Cadillacs, and was dropped at the end of the '67 model year and replaced with the GM "standard" non-powered 2-wire resistance sender.

Its unique circuitry has different diagnostics than C1 or C3 senders; I wrote an article on them in the February '06 issue of "Corvette Enthusiast" magazine that you might find helpful (800-448-3611 for back issues).
