    Joe,

Like Brian said I wouldn't change anything especially since your old ones were the same size and most likely original.

Re: 67 voltage regulator mounting "wellnut" size

Based on what I have heard so far, I suspect that the wellnuts I have are the correct size. However, I'd like to confirm that with some documentation that I can have available the next time my car is judged.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, the next time the car is judged you will have different judges and they won't even notice these wellnuts. That can be considered either a flaw or a benefit of the system. And, unless it's in the JG, the odds of arguing your point are only moderately good.

I've campaigned my car, and I've judged. I try hard to let the owner be right when it's reasonable to do so and have even gone overboard to allow it. But I'll be the first to admit that we as judges make mistakes. And yes, other judges have even made mistakes on my car. I just didn't let the 1 and 2 pointers stress me out.

But NEVER change a part on your car you think is original. Never.

        Joe,

Because there most likely is no way of ever documenting the use of these items, I would consider the next best thing. Copy and print this discussion and keep it with your car for it's next judging event. You can show it to the judge that thinks you may have the incorrect size parts.

One more point. If I remember correctly, as the screw is tightened, the grommet compresses more and more which would change it's diameter. So, if that's the case, there is no specific diameter. It's a dimension that doesn't exist.

          Hi Mike:

I do plan to have a copy of this thread available the next time my car is judged. Frankly, I'm surprised that the answer to my question remains murky. I think that at least a couple other respondents said that that they, too, had received the same deduction, so apparently there are several judges out there who believe that they "know" what the correct size is.

Regarding the head changing size as the screw is tightened, I think the diameter remains relatively unchanged unless you overtighten the screw. It's hard to overtighten the screw because doing so tends to twist off the captive nut on the other side of the inner fender.

            Joe,

Two of the cushions in my 66 appear to be slightly wider, bowed at the sides and thinner, a result of being tightened slightly more than the third which is smaller in diameter and has straight sides. I think the screw is designed to bottom in the nut because of it's shoulder, or unthreaded section, but something is changing the amount of crush/diameter on the cushions. Think I'll remove the regulator in the AM and see what I can learn.

Be careful trying to remove the regulator. You usually have to destroy the wellnuts to get the screws out.

If you believe yours to be original, I would like to know what head diameter you measure. You can probably make that measurement without removing anything.

                Joe,

Just measured two that were accessible. One is .575", the other is .580". I haven't tried to remove the screws. I would guess these are roughly 9/16" when new and uncompressed? Could be even less I suppose.
