Early 65 corvette hood surround rivet?

In my 65 AM it shows a rivet securing the harness J-clips on the outer hood channels where there is body paint. One J-clip per side. Approximately 6-8 inches forward the firewall corner on each outer fender. These J-clips hold up the their indivdual harness. One on the right and left side. Question: My 65 is a no hit car built in Jan. 65. I had to replace the hood surround for other problems. There was never a rivet holding these clips in place. The factory simply applied bonding adhesive and glued them on. When I transferred the clips (2) from one surround to the other, I noticed a hole drilled into the J-clip. This hole was probably for a rivet, but no rivet was used. My old surround is in bare glass sitting in my shop free of any holes for a rivet. My 65 JG specifies this rivet and it having body color. I am going to leave it the way it was done at the factory. What gives? Anyone else with an early 65 with this situation? Thanks Dick Gutman

There were some differences in application on the line. After 63, most of these differences were in the rivet type, not the lack of one. The method that you describe is the one used on the 63s at least the earlier ones. I have never run across a 65 without rivets. I am not saying that it is impossible that some were done this way, but I have never seen one and it certainly was not the norm. There were several rivet types used at times over the years. Most were common pop rivets, but in 65 some solid aluminum rivets were used, and for a time in 66 rosette rivets were used. So much for the security of rosette rivets.

'65 TM&JG says AO Smith clips used bond comp'd

Check 5th ed., page 124 "Wiring Clips and Retainers", paragraph (b). My 014xx S-body coupe (Nov 8 trim tag) has rivets. Per AIM sheets, there were several changes in clips/rivets in the Sept '64 timeframe.

        Dick,

I have a 65 conv., serial #120079 that had these j-clips bonded on. I too noticed the difference from the AIM, but just thought maybe Bubba took the shortcut. Now I'm not so sure he did.

          Wayne,

My July '66 has a Rosette rivet and I have always wondered if it was correct. Does this seem right for the build of the car?

Was the rivet and J clip attached at exactly the same place on each side and is there a measurement for that?

I have never done any survey on the dates of the rosette rivets. The one example that I have, in my show and tell kit, is black glass, so that would make it a late production. The location of the hole is fairly consistant, but I havent measured to see that they are all exactly the same.
