Re: 67 voltage regulator mounting "wellnut" size

I was dinged for the same thing. I wouldn't go changing anything. Do we know for sure that there was only 1 supplier for this item or that they were produced only 1 way? I believe that the General had at least 1 backup supplier for just about everything. JMHO

    I agree

It seems the judges think they all came one way. We all know that wasn't true with a lot of things. This may be another. Mike

      Well...

no pun intended! There were documented running changes in this area. Anyone with a '65 AIM can track the sequence.

7/20/64 The well nut changed from 3858889 to 3849954. If memory serves, this was a slightly longer well nut to better hold the regulator to the inner fender and not 'pop' through.

11/20/64 The well nut changed from 3849954 to 3876130 and the screw changed from 3866484 to 3876129. This was the part number combo used for the balance of mid-year production.

Auveco's catalog tells you everything you want to know about the late version of the v-reg well nut system as they supply functionally identical parts and reference the GM part number. Their catalog gives ALL of the physical dimensions relating to this well nut. Basically, the screw is a #10-24 and the well shank is 0.580" long with a 0.562" diameter head that's 0.187" thick.

From walking scrap yards and collecting v-regs, my memory says the earlier style well nut system used a smaller screw (#8-32?) with the well nut being smaller to match (is fully covered by the flange of the v-reg when installed).

Bottom line, the system was easy to mount but a PITA to dismount and didn't age very well. Most aged originals tear apart during de-mount requiring vice grips on the back side to hold the captive nut in order to back the screw out.

So, there is rhyme/reason for why judges check the 'size' of v-reg well nuts based on year of car/date of manufacture...

        Re: Well...

        Hi Jack:

The well nuts on my 67 voltage regulator (shown in the photograph in my original posting) closely match your description of the later style 3876130. You report that the head should be .562" in diameter and .187' thick. Mine measure about .600" in diameter and .180" thick. Also, the screw is a 10-24.

So, do you think the judges were wrong to say that the wellnuts on my voltage regulator are too small? If these are too small, what size are the judges looking for?
