In checking the archives, I see that some owners have experienced discovering caulking in removing the heater core. I just experienced the same removing the heater core in my original, unrestored, low mileage '65. When I discovered it, I was puzzled as I have owned the car for 26 years and thought that the core might have been replaced even though it said Harrison A65 on the end tank.
I am having a new core custom built using the original end tanks.
The technician rebuilding the core has been around for many years and told me that it was common to use caulking to suffice for insulator gaskets when the appropriate were not available as the car came down the line.
