    Small Block Engine Rebuild

How much should I budget for a machine shop to rebuild and assemble a 327 block, crank, and heads?

Include all the machine work and everything inside the engine.
Machine work, pistons, rods, pins, rings, cam, lifters, rockers, valves, springs, and a 3 angle valve job.

Do not include anything external to the block and heads - manifolds, starter, fuel pump, carb, oil pan, distributor.

    Re: Small Block Engine Rebuild

    Hi,

I did my '63 last year and the bill came to about $3500. This included block preparation including boring, crank preparation and balancing, new rods and bearings, new cam and lifters, and complete head work including new valves, springs, seals, etc., including screw in rocker studs. Resurfacing of fly wheel and balancing of flywheel clutch and pressure plate combination.

The only thing I used from the original set up was the pistons, rocker arms, crank and head cores. Block came from Engines Limited.

We wound up doing the assembly ourselves.. If I had it to do over again, I would have had the machine shop assemble and run in.

I have the bill if you want a fax for the details, just let me know. It's pretty extensive but should give you a good idea as to what specific items may cost.

Have the shop dyno the engine. If anything is wrong it can be fixed/adjusted immediately. This will also wring-out any water or oil leaks.

1500 to 2K if not on dyno and i assemble. add 300 for shop to assemble and 500 for dyno time. that's here in cumberland, md. add 1k for mark 4. they include new pistons for price approximations. mike

If you don't dyno the engine, it's a good idea to run it before you drop the body if you're in that mode. Pulling it out of a nicely detailed, painted and finished project is pretty disheartening.
