1968 Corvette 15 x 7. I believe it was used only for that year.

My rims have "AG" on them and they are 8" rims. There is no date code, just AG to the right side of the valve stem. Could they be Camaro rims? My car is a fairly unmolested 71 LS5. I can trace ownership back to 78 and neither of the two previous owners changed the rims. They even look original paint wise. Black on the back side with overspray / runs of silver coming thru the openings. Ideas??

        Tom -

Did you measure them from inside-to-inside of the rim flange, or outside-to-outside? Rim width is measured inside-to-inside.

          I didn't measure...used GM Corvette rim specs.

            John,

Difficult to measure with the tires on. Although I know that they are 8" rims by the trim rings and the P235/60 series tires on them. You can't fit these trim rings on 7" rims. The hub has GM and KH on it.

Sure you can. That is the difference in the '68 15x7 AG wheel and all the other Chevy 15x7 rally wheels. The wheel was more deep dish to use the wider trim ring.

Slide a rule or tape measure through and just barely touch where the rim rolls up (away from center). Then check to the same point on the other side. It will be something like 7-1/4 or whatever and that error is the thickness of the steel rim.

                A BFG T/A 235/60-15 is recommended for a rim 6.5 - 8.5 and spec measurements are made using a 7 inch rim.

See, you learn something new every day. For years, I always thought that the 7" rims used the more shallow trim rings and the deeper ones were for the 8" rims. I'll go out and take some measurements this evening.

Now the question is how did these get on my otherwise unmolested LS5 car? Past two owners claim they never changed the rims and that takes me back to 1978. So somewhere they got changed between 71 and 78. I guess it will remain a mystery.

LOL. 1971 to 1978 were the most active years in Corvette modifications ever, I think. Muscle car era ending, a lot of smog cars being built, and the restoration craze hadn't really taken a big swing yet.

It could have hit a small car lot, someone there said they needed the 8 inch for their '69 Camaro or Monte Carlo or '68 Corvette, and suddenly, you have wheels swapped. Maybe without anyone knowing.

The wide trim ring will be nearly at the center plane of the 7 inch wheel and about an inch gap on the 8 inch. This isn't a good picture, but it's the only one I could find that you can see the space between the ring and the center section.
