    Transmission number location

Where are the id numbers on a 1973 turbo 400. Can I see them with out removing the transmission? What would the correct numbrers (part and date) be for a december car?
    THANKS

Most of the THM-400 identification information will be found on a data plate attached to the passenger side of the transmission. This is a rectangular, aluminum plate that may be printed in black, yellow, and, possibly, other colors. Information is stamped into various boxes on the plate.

The first 2 characters of the code should be "73" representing model year. The next character should be an alpha character representing the engine application (K=L-48, Z=L-82, S=LS-4). The last 3 digits are the date code, but it's an arcane coding system.

There may also be another stamping which will appear like "73 CK XXXX". This indicates model year, Chevrolet, engine, and sequential build number.

I do not know the part number for the transmission stamped on the tag.

Yup; that's just how it is. If the other numbers are right, the part number will just about automatically be right. If you find a part number on the tag, though, I'd appreciate your telling me what it is. It will likley be a 7 digit number that begins with an "8".

I found the tag, it is not so good news. All it has are the following numbers on the bottom of a silver tag. It could have been painted but grease and grime has taken it off.

          74 C P 35858

I am pretty sure that is what it say's. If this does not seem correct I will check it in the day time. It was night and I used a small flash light 10 minutes ago.

It might be a good idea to check it again as carefully as you can. It is very possible that the printed information on the plate has been lost. The "74 CP 35858" stamping would indicate that the transmission is not original to the car. "74" indicates a 1974 model year transmission. "C" refers to "Chevrolet". I can't find any "P" used for engine application. However, "B" and "R" were used and it might actually be one of these when you look closer.

I would expect that this was an exchange, rebuilt transmission.

VIN derivative on driver's side, just above the pan, on a flat machined surface...upside down, if I remember correctly.

As Steve says DS, just above the pan rail -- behind the rubber boot for the shift linkage. I don't recall the upside down, but that could be. We don't get to see too many of these.
