Yes, I'd say that there's a good chance the car should still have it's "tank sticker". Usually, these will be found glued to the top of the tank to the left of the filler opening. You will need to remove the filler neck seal (somewhat of a chore on a 78-82) and peer in with a flashlight to see if it's there. To retrieve it, you will need to drop the fuel tank. Any attempt to try to "pull it out" through the filler opening will result in damage to the paper and, possibly, complete desturction of it.
You may find other copies of the build sheet tucked up under the dash somewhere, under the carpets, or tucked into one of the front frame horn openings. If so, you save yourself the trouble of dropping the tank.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 78'pace car tank sticker
Doug:
Last year at the Lowe's motor speedway regional meet...a Pace Car (5 miles) was there and the owner discovered that it had a build sheet (tank sticker) tucked in the driver's side strut bracket. He had pulled one from a matching 78 Silver Anniversary car...another low-mileage unit. These served as inspiration to write and submit an article to the Corvette Restorer that will be coming out soon on late model C3 Build Sheets.
Joe mentioned the under dash...typically they are found between the speedo and tach units. Suspension components are other areas where they are found. With an 8 mile Pace Car...I would look thoroughly before dropping the tank. Wrench marks on those straps may cause suspicision on the part of judges if you elect to go the Bowtie route. Look and determine if it's there but it doesn't make sense to remove it from a five mile car.Tom Russo

78 Pace Car Special Markings
Doug..are there any white pencil markings on the back window of the 8 mile Pace Car?
Years ago..I had pace car #541..and a local used car dealer was hot to trot to buy it. He did but after he bought another Pace Car that had about 18 miles on it.
He trailered home the 18 mile car from the purchase and showed it to me. The car had some special white numbers written on the back window. With fading memory..I remember him saying something to the effect that every 15 cars or so were pulled out and marked for various checks.
Now I wish I had written down all the details..
I put 150,000 miles on my 78 Pace Car..and it was fun to own and to drive!
I saw an untouched brand new 78 Pace Car at Bloomington back around '79 or so that had one leather door panel and one cloth door panel as delivered.

Re: 78 Pace Car Special Markings
Poor guy is trying to explain to some NCRS judge it came that way and the glazed look coming over the judges face suggesting "now I've heard it all!"
More intriguing is what the build sheet would have called out. We'll have to keep a lookout for that one.Tom Russo

Re: 78 Pace Car Special Markings
Interesting story joe,,,!! I dont see any evidence of any writing on my back window,, (bummer),, but do see all the yellow chaulk markings still in the frame everywhere underneath!!,, Yes i agree these cars are fun to drive,, Ive got another pc thats been restored with about 1500 miles on the restoration,, I take lots of flac from people about my 8 mile pace car , trailor queen and all, but like i say,, "you can restore as many times as you want but you can only be original once",, plus having the second pc, why drive the other one?,, thanks guys for your thoughts,, later, doug- Top

Don't know if you're aware of it, but you can get a copy of the original Dealer Wholesale Invoice for your car from Chevrolet for $50.00; they have them for '77-up, St. Louis cars included.- Top
