    Re: tank sticker

I wouldn't try. I would try to get an enhanced laser color copy of it(both sides) then take the original and have it sealed into a clear plastic envelope. The copy I had made of my sticker looks better than the original. The photo lab boosted up the contrast and made it easier to read. The original is sealed up in a vacuum so it won't deterierate(sp)any further.Good luck

      "p"-------

I have, personally, never heard of anyone that restores or otherwise preserves these documents. I suppose that one could look up the folks that have just done a painstaking restoration of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and see if they'd tackle the job, but, I suspect, the price would be far more than the value of your car. Seriously, though, these "tank stickers" were actually just a very thin sheet of paper from a multi-sheet, carbon paper, business form set. In the days before the widespread use of copy machines and sophisticated computer-generated forms, this type of duplicate document generation mechanism was often used. These forms were never intended to have the attribute of longevity, particularly when exposed to the elements as "tank sticker' are to one degree or another.

Beyond this fact, bear in mind that the most important function of the "tank sticker" in today's world is to document the original configuration of your car. And, you can "preserve" this function of the document if you're not able to otherwise preserve the document itself. To do this, simply have the document copied and and the copy NOTARIZED. That way, you'll have an "official" copy of the original which you may well be able to preserve, especially if you have the copy made on a high quality machine and on 100% linen-content paper(similar to the paper used for currency).

I had my sticker restored, the only thing that I could read was "order copy". Now I can read 80%. The person had done other stickers. She was located in San Diego. It can be done. Good Luck, Dick

There is an article in CF (march, 1995) about tank sticker restoration. I found it very interesting, with some tips to do a soft preservation and a source is mentioned (Mario Bruno Art Services, in San Francisco). He does old papers preservation. Sticker paper deteriorate itself due to acid present in its components... All my best, Roberto, NCRS #30019, RMC
