    restoring 1971 LT1

I have a 1971 LT1 350 4 speed convertible.I have tried to find exactly how many cars where made like this and how many are still in operation. The car is in great condition, but have wanted to do a frame down on it for some time now. I thought knowing this information would help me to determine the value of the car after resoration or if restoration should even be attempted.

    Re: restoring 1971 LT1

GM records can tell you how many '71 convertibles were built (7121) and how many LT1 engines were built for both coupe and convertible (1949), but that's it. Compound probability statistics (how many with this option, that option, Etc.) don't exist. About all you can do is 'assume' the spread of LT1 across coupe and convertible was the same and estimate the count 1949/21801 = 8.9% LT1 hence 8.9% of 7121= 637 units.

On how many still exist, nobody has that answer. Cars aren't registered State by State with build option information. Plus, a number of Corvettes have been exported since they were originally delivered. Suffice it to say you have a rare car AND it's the only one built with that VIN tag on it...

Jim ---- If your LT1 is in GREAT condition, why restore it? Look seriously into the NCRS Bowtie program first. When cleaning components, exercise caution not to destroy factory markings, condition, configuration, etc. My '67 restoration was started a few months before the Bowtie program became a reality. Sure wish I had waited another year, or so. But after dissasembling the '67, it was too late because ORIGINALITY ONLY HAPPENS ONCE. Now I have another possible chance with my '69 one owner car.

        Re: restoring 1971 LT1 - Addendum

Jim ---- If you are not yet a member of NCRS, you may wish to join. See home page and select "Membership Services". If you live in the US, it's a measily $35 per year. Then, go to "Judging Awards" and look toward the bottom for NCRS - Chevrolet Bowtie Award for an explination. Check out the other benefits, mainly publications but, when you begin meeting and talking with others at some events, you'll have joined the family.
        Good Corvetting,
