    Cleaning 427 fuel & A.I.R. diverter assys

My '69 427/435 sat outside for a while prior to my ownership during which the gas tank collected copius amounts of rain water. The gas tank is FULL OF BROWN CRUD (rust?) and the AIR diverter pipes (off the car) contained a fine dark brown dusty substance. I suspect all original emissions hoses are also filled with this dark brown dust. A replacement gas tank and fuel supply line may be the first order if they cannot be cleaned. In the attempt to retain as much originality as possible, any suggestions provided to rid the fuel and A.I.R. systems of this crud would be most welcomed. The car has not and will not be started until my comfort level is attained and I'm fussy.
    Thanks, Kent #6201

Kent, I have taken gas tanks to the local radiator shops and had them cooked out. I do not know if they will do that in your area. If not, try a strong cleaning solution, simple green, purple power, etc to clean the tank. Dispose of the residue properly. Check the inside for obvious rust after it is dry. If rusty you have two options. (1) Replace with repro tank (2) Purchase a tank sealer compound such as sold by Eastwood. BTW do not smoke yer pipe while working on the gas tank! A mistake with the pipe and you will be limited to option (1)

The smog parts I would send to Bill Hodel for restoration. A lot easier that trying to do it yourself.
