I recently bought a 1959 Cadillac Coupe DeVille 2dr. hardtop. It's last run was in 1974. It actually cranked up with the help of some new points, plugs, dist.cap and rotor, along with some direct fuel injection (fuel poured in the carb). It actually sat there and idled at about 500 rpm's! It has its original Carter AFB, not WCFB and I was wondering who I could send it to for an overhaul? I don't want the typical "Corvette" style restoration which includes perfect cosmetics but just a simple rebuild and cleanup. Any suggestions? Also, I can't get the column shifter to budge out of the park position. The linkage was disconnected at the transmission for shipping (since the car was not running) so I guess that the stuck shift lever can't be because of transmission issues. Any suggestions here? A local mechanic who knows nothing about cars WITOUT computers thinks that the shifter is stuck due to rust in the column. Sorry, I know this has nothing to do with Vettes.

why not rebuild the afb yourself? they are relativly simple and a master rebuild kit ought to be available locally. doubt rust in col. the problem. re-hook the linkage and see what happens. love those 59 caddy tail lites. mike- Top

Justin, the '59 is a great Caddy! There are many businesses that rebuild carbs. The better ones give you a choice, whether to do a rebuild with or without cosmetic refurbishing or "re-coloring" of the carb. The archives have many good sources. The guy I used, Craig Woodruff is, I think, retiring from that business. Look in Archives under "Carb rebuilding". As far as your shifter, those old units were pretty straightforward, with , I believe, only one rod that goes to trans. It is possible that it is rust or corrosion..not sure myself. When you get the '59 driving, no offense, but find yourself a mechanic that remembers cars WITHOUT computers! Good Luck!
