    TCS solenoid vacuum hook-up

    I recently purchased a NOS TCS solenoid for my '74 BB 4 speed car but can't determine how to hook-up the vacuum lines, mine had been bypassed, because it was missing, now where do the lines go and where to the come from. I've seen two different drawings showing two different configurations, what do you guys think?
    Thanks;

    Cary,

    There seems to be a good diagram in the Dr.Rebuild catalogue. If you have a copy, it's on page 85. If not, I can scan it and email it to you.

      There ought to be a drawing in the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual) as well. I don't have one for 1974, but the 1968-1972 AIMs have a drawing for this. The AIM for your year car is very handy to have.

        Robert thanks for responding. I looked at that and it seems to show a line from the distributor vacuum advance going to one port and a line from a manifold fitting located behind the carb going to the other, this is what my assembly manuel shows also. My problem is that someone, because there was no solenoid, connected the manifold fitting to a line that contains a filter and then a splitter having one line go to windshield washer and the other thru the firewall. Should that line be connected to the carb, that is where the vacuum advance is connected now. Maybe I need more than just the correct hook-up for the solenoid, I may need to change the routing on everything. Thanks for your input.

          I to purchased one but have not installed it yet. Mine is a 74 BB w/automatic. I started replacing hoses last fall using the AIM and Dr. Rebuild info as a guide. That's when I realized the TCS was missing.

          I want to share an experience with you. One of the first lines I replaced was to the EGR valve. I noticed it appeared to be plugged up. I didn't think much of this and tossed it into my "keep box" ...I never throw anything away untill well after the job is finished. While driving the car the next few weeks, I experienced severe tip-in hesitation similiar to a worn accelerator pump. I planned on a carb overhaul over the winter.

          I don't know why but, I started to think about that plugged EGR valve hose. Maybe its because of my strong belief in Murphy's Law, "When something goes wrong - go back and look at the last thing you fixed."

          I looked through the box and found the hose, reinstalled it, and road tested the car. The car ran great! It was then I thought back to my days working as a mechanic at a Pittsburgh Chevy Dealer, We regularly used to plug these hose by sticking the end of a fuse in the hose and breaking it off at the glass. Hell, we even had some with "calibrated vacuum signal" by just drilling a small hole in the metal end of the fuse.

          My point... when you finish making your car "correct", don't be surprised if it runs worse. Me, my system will look correct when finished but, I plan on enjoying the drive without all of the '74 generation performance issues.
