    Re: The "Blue Wrench"

I always thought that was a "Flaming Blue Point Wrench" Handiest tool in the box.

      Re: The "Blue Wrench"

Yup, that's the one. No tool box should be without it.

        Bearing press & Slide hammer

I've found some of these bearing presses for on-the-car use will not exert enough force to pop an old axle out.

Using bars and hammers, and some press manufacturers recomment hammering on the back of the press, is a good way to smash stuff, and invariably, stuff you didn't want to smash.

A slide hammer axle puller will not do it on its own, at least not in the time frame most want. My first one was done that way and after 7-1/2 hours, it came out.

However, the two together work very well. Tighten the press as tight as you can get it, hammer away with the slide hammer 4 or 5 times or so, then tighten again on the press. It will come out in short order if the bearing hasn't melted and welded together.

If that happens (had one once in Terre Haute, IN on US 40), it is torch time.

Re: Bearing press & Slide hammer

Well, it came out without much drama. About 4-5 whacks on the spindle knocker and out it came.
I guess one day I will try putting big pressure on with my new press, but not nessary on this one.
          Thanks guys.
          Frank.

It works especially well on Magnesium parts..

It's important to note however, that this should only be attempted on FOMOCO products while parked outside in a vacant field that has been recently plowed.

NEVER on GM products regardless of location.
