1965 327 exhaust manifold heat choke tube

Hello to all. I have a good question that I'm stumpted on. On the 1964 65 327/350 HP pass side exhaust manifold theres a hole where the heat transfer choke tube gets pushed in for the carb choke for the holly. Is the hole in the manifold go through and actual exhaust flows through this tube or is it just bored enough for the tube to sit in.

    Harry-----

There is another, shorter tube which fits into the hole in the manifold (which is drilled through). Then, as I recall, the choke tube from the carburetor then fits into this tube's upper end. The upper end of the choke tube in the manifold is more-or-less flush with the top of the manifold. This tube in the manifold often "burns out" due to manifold exhaust gas heat. It's GM discontinued, but available in reproduction.

The design of this system, when it's in good repair, ensures that no exhuast gas goes through the tube to the carb choke----just hot air.

      Harry,
In addition to what Joe posted, there is also a third tube. At least there is on my '65, 250HP.

The third tube goes into the bottom of the straight tube that is through the manifold. It is used to provide incoming air to the choke system. On my car, this incoming air tube is routed upward, between the valve cover and the exhaust manifold and has a rubber hose that connects it the to the carburator.

Air is drawn down through this tube, up through the manifold, and continues up through the pipe to the automatic choke. Hope that I've done a good job of explaining.

      Regards,
      Gene
