Rear axle bearings for a '57

I'm replacing the rear wheel (axle) bearings in my '57. However, it's been 30 years since I've done this, and I'm a little fuzzy on exactly which bearings to buy.

The originals measure .906" wide (ain't them little digital micrometers wonderful?). A local CarQuest quoted me $108 each for new replacements. The width of these is listed as .9055". Their catalog shows one part number as fitting the '57 model only. Bearings in this catalog for '58 - '62 models have a different part number that is about 1" wide.

The Corvette parts house catalogs I have don't list axle bearings for any pre-'58 Corvette. They only show a 1" wide bearing fitting '58 - '62 models.

Does anyone have recent experience buying axle bearings for a '57 model? Will the later 1" wide '58 - '62 bearings fit? Is $108 each the going rate for '57-only .906" wide bearings?

      Jerry,
Might give NAPA a try. '56 rear bearing is #507ER. Bearing comes with the retainer ring. Recall cost was around $65 about three years ago I'm thinking '56 bearing and ' 57 rear bearing are the same. Regards, Jim

If you have the right numbers any good bearings supplier can cross reference the bearings for you. I got mine for $52 each. If nor sure of numbers check Timken Bearings web site or e-mail them and they will send you the correct numbers. Some are even still in stock.

          What I did.

I bought the CarQuest #RW307R .9" wide bearings for $108 each. They came with new iron rings to hold them in place on the axle. I appreciate the advice I was given on where to find less costly bearings, but I was in a rush and jumped on these for the overnight availability. This '57 is one of my FI test cars. I need to flog a unit this weekend and ship it Monday.

I did not even try the 1" wide '58 - '62 bearings. I discovered someone had done this in the past on one of my axles. The extra .1" width had distorted the flange that pushes the bearing into the housing seat.

Thanks to all the responders for your help.
