C2: Corvette News, Big Block Article

Would anyone happen to remember an article in a 66 or 67 Corvette News that discussed the mfg and assemblt of the big block engines at the Tonawanda plant? I'm looking for the picture of the engines going through the paint line. If so, could someone scan and post the picture, or send it to me so I can post it? Possible it may be in a 65 issue, can't remember. Thanks.

      Michael,
Checking my 1966 Corvette News (Vol. 9, No. 5), I found an article titled "Building the 427, From foundry to shaving cream to boxcar."
Is this the one you are interested in?
There is a picture of the engines being painted with a quick-drying engine enamel with water behind and under the engines.
Let me know if this is what you are interested in, and I will get you a copy someway.
      Dave

Thanks Dave. That sounds like the picture I've been looking for. If I remember correctly, it shows the entire engine and several more behind it, all hung from hooks that are attached to the carburetor mounting studs. Do you have a scanner handy? Thanks again.

I have scanned the entire page to my harddrive and can email that to you if you give me your address. I tried to enlarge the one picture you want, no. 19, but wasn't able to do it. Maybe you can do that when you get it.
          Let me know.

              Big Block Engine Paint

Dave Barclay was able to find and send this interesting pic of the Tonawanda engine paint line, taken in 1966. It clearly shows all of the items that were attached to the assembly, including the exhaust manifolds. The paint gun used is a pressure feed, high volume, high pressure unit that pumps out incredible amounts of material. Also visible in the pic is the covered bypass hose. That means there is typically a ring, or line, of orange paint on the end of the hose. Unfortunately, the pic isn't clear enough to show the 3" wide piece of tape that was used to cover the fuel pump opening. Thanks David.

                Painted Manifolds

Here's another interesting GM photo. It's a new complete 67 L88 engine assy. The exhaust manifolds are, without doubt, painted engine orange. It obviously wasn't a mist coat, as some believe, but rather a quite heavy and complete coat.

                  Painted Manifolds

Original orange paint on a 66 425 HP. Most of the color burned black within the first 15 minutes of run time fourty years ago but the orange on the flanges is still there to this day. First the color turns black, then to the chartruese that's obvious on the lower portion.

I have a 63-67 fact book by M. F. DOBBINS clearly stating BB manifolds were painted orange. Mis information or typo or what.

                      Re: Painted Manifolds

years ago, at carlisle, i bought a pair of 66 bb exh maniufolds from the original owner who told me he drove the car from the dealership to his house(about 5 miles if i recall). he then removed the stock exhaust system and put a set of hookers on the 425 hp 66. when i bought the near new production manifolds, there was chevy engine orange over about 50% of the manifold's external surface. i've always oranged out the bb exh manifolds when restoring a midyear big block. mike

                        Re: Painted Manifolds

Yes, the "good ol days" at Corvette swap meets. I remember seeing a few sets like that. I also remember a set that had never had a fire inside of them. Had about 80% coverage of orange paint but were brand new, never run. I later learned they were take-off's from a brand new complete 425 HP engine assembly that was going into some kind of race boat which required a totally different set of manifolds. In fact, I know someone that probably still has a set just like that but I don't remember if they were 396 or 427. I do remember that they had about the same amount of orange paint on them.

That's a cool old pic. What is the part in front of the right head? Fuel line?
