    Re: Very Rare Corvette Found

    Duke,

I grew up in Seattle (West Seattle High '62) and the urban myth then was a guy who had died in a nearly new 57 T-Bird in the Nevada desert, but guess what, ... they could even give the car away because they (altogether now) "Couldn't get the smell out". Hell, if it were a 57 Vette I'd find a way.

      Hi Marty:

Don't misunderstand, I have no doubt that someone, or many, would have attempted and / or succeeded with this conversion, after all, the 409 was THE hot motor when the 63 was introduced, the key word in my post was "original" , as in , from the factory.

        Re: standard or optional?

He may have a point. If you ordered a 63 without stating a body style what would you get??? The coupe was more $$ so I imaginge the SW was an option from that stand point. Ours is difficult to drive, but I just love the car. 340HP and 4.11s make up for the lack of rear vision. after all not much comes up from behind!!!! Eric W. Jackson

          Whew! What's that smell?

Queen Anne, '64, Dean. I heard the urban myth circa 1959, and it was a current model year Corvette - no more than six months old.

            Re: standard or optional?

I had the oportunity, recently, to seat inside a SWC. Although it is difficult to see through that split, I didn't find the problem terrible, just a minor minus in a car with great design. I found more unpleasant the greenhouse effect in a warm day, but all in all a great design. Best from Argentina, Roberto, NCRS #30019, RMC

              Beauty or Blaphemy?

I certainly agree with you, Jerry, old buddy. SWCs are over-styled, have way too much gingerbread, but they were totally cool when new, are totally cool now, and will be totally cool when Ol'Geezer and the rest of us are long dead and buried.

I think I understand what you mean by "hard to drive", Eric - the steering and clutch are heavy, the brakes are totally unpredictable, and it can snapspin at the limit in a heartbeat, but learning how to drive that car as a teenager on racetracks and twisty two land roads without wrecking the car or killing myself gave me a set of life long driving skills that few guys possess.

                Re: Assault on the senses

I agree that driving the old cars has got to enhance your driving skills. Old cars with bias ply tires wander and you never know if your drum brakes are going to be there especially if they got wet. You can't take anything for granted. They are an assault on the senses. But you gotta love it.

The Older I Get, The Better I Was ?

                  Hi Duke :

I got the originality bug a couple of years ago and purchased repro wide oval redlines for my 69, looked great, SMALL, (remember how HUGE they looked the first time ya saw them), but great. It took one sixty mile trip to realize things aren't always as we remember them. When I think of the things I used to do on those Hi Tech tires, knowing that they would save my ass because there were none better, it is amazing I'm here to recall those moments.

                    I'm stopping here!!!

I don't know who is more crazy. Me for reading this far down this thread or the rest of you for actually thinking that no one else has heard any of these wild goose stories before. My appologies to those of you who unfortunatly actually lost members of your families defending our great country. Joe.

Re: Steel Body 53 - I have one....

Well I knew I would get some comments on that one, but I didn`t expect it to become a discussion on the relative merits of the SWC. I have heard that story about every year that was built I guess. I just smiled, nodded my head and said that I sure would like to see it. But now the parts manager at my local Chevy Dealership told me about this 65 with FI,AC,PS,PB, etc. that I have just got to see. That is as soon as he can get time to take me to see it. I am holding my breath. Listen for the thud.

Re: The smoker you drink, the player you....

....whatever. Back in the young 70's I turned down putting a new set of radials on my 69 to stick with the standard good ol' bia plys. I always blamed the rough ride on the road. TBarr #24014
