C2 66/67 Sunfire Yellow Paint Question

I need to determine, from members' experience, which paint manufacturer currently offers a single stage acrylic urethane paint system that faithfully reproduces the "hue" of 66/67 Sunfire Yellow in acrylic lacquer. Thank you, in advance, for your assistance.

Re: C2 66/67 Sunfire Yellow Paint Question

I agree that this color varies quite a bit from car to car. I had an original paint 1967 version that sold at the Mecum auction last year and it was quite washed out. I like the pale version of the Sunfire Yellow color, many of the new paint jobs turn out quite bright compared to the original pale yellow.
Folks either love or hate this color, I happen to love it and hope to have another '67 in this color some day.

          Brian and Tim:

          Thank you for your replies.

Yes, there is no doubt about the variations in the Sunfire Yellow color.

I was hopeful that someone had done some research and had come to some conclusion as to which manufacturer's acrylic urethane paint system/recipe reproduces the original Sunfire Yellow color.

I'm still open to suggestions and I look forward to any additional replies.

I had this same problem with my 66 sunfire yellow car. I had talked to my local PPG supplier nearly 2 years ago and they had no mix code for single stage acrylic urethane. I'm now finally getting close to painting the car and recently was at the paint store getting other supplies. I inquired again about the paint. He checked in the computer again and still nothing. He called PPG and they told him they now had a mix for sunfire yellow that had been "scanned". I had them mix a gallon for me. When I got it home I could immediately tell that is was the wrong color. It was too pale and had a greenish tint. I called them back and was told that it should be close enough to blend into an adjoining panel. I told them that I had too much time and money in the car to paint it the wrong color! The car had one repaint in the correct color sometime in the mid 70's. I had one of the original front fender side panels that was on the car. I got it down and sanded part of it down to the factory finish, then sanded both the original and the repaint with 1200 and buffed them out. They were a perfect match. I then sprayed a strip of the new paint on this panel and took to back to the paint store to show them that the PPG mix code was incorrect. They had to use nearly 1/2 gallon more material to get it to the right color, but I am now satisfied. I can scan the mix label and mail it to you if you would like.

I have a pint of PPG sunfire yellow acrylic lacquer that I had bought about 10 years ago. I sprayed a test stripe of this color on the original panel also. It appears to be a slightly darker yellow compared to the original.

                Todd:

Thank you for your detailed reply.

What you have learned through your efforts is of great interest to me and I would very much appreciate receiving your scan of the PPG mix label.

I'm a great fan of Sunfire Yellow and I want to get it just right. I, like you, have put too much of myself into the restoration of my car to take a shortcut now on paint.

                Thanks again.

                Henry
