    Oil cannister

I went to change the oil filter in my 63. The long retaining bolt came right out of the cannister when I loostened it. Now I have the assembly out and I want to make sure I get the pieces in the correct order. First should there be a washer on the end of the bolt where it is against the cannister? The order of the parts in the cannister when I removed them from the inside going into the assenbly was; Cone piece, rubber washer, metal washer, spring. It would seem to make more sense if the Rubber washer were against the cannister (to seal it against leaking) then the metal washer the spring the cone and I would think there should be a metal washer on the outside of the cannister under the long bolt. The assembly didn't leak before but I do remember cranking it very tight to prevent leaking.
As always thanks for the assistance.

    Bob -

I don't recall the stacking of parts on the inside, but there's supposed to be a thick copper washer between the bottom of the bolt head and the boss on the outside of the canister. Long Island Corvette sells a canister seal/repair kit with the outside washer and some internal parts; there may be an illustration of the pieces on their website (www.licorvette.com).

I checked their web site. They list a repair kit but there is no list of parts or picture or information on how it goes together.

        Bob -

Found it - it was in their ad in the March, 2003 issue of "Vette Vues" magazine; see (sloppy) scan below.

          LIC kit with retainer clip

          Bob,

For the LIC kit to work, I think one needs to machine a groove in the bolt to accept the retainer clip.

When I examine the assembly it looks like the bolt shaft has a couple of notches in it to hold the spring assembly in place. Was the retainer clip part of the original assembly? Or something LIC came up with. If I gently tap the cup I can probably get the top lip to hold on the notches. It looks like the only other peice I am missing is the copper washer.

              Bob,

The retainer clip idea was not used by GM. Originally, there was only the staking on the shaft of the bolt to keep the other items captured in place.

                Bob:
I happen to have a LIC Kit #38-11C that I had bought for my '66 and never used.
The cross section they have in the kit is as follows: Looking from outside to the inside...Bolt Head, Copper Washer, Canster, Spring, Steel Washer, Rubber Washer, Cup and Retainer.
                Hope this helps
