    c1 Transmission

    I need help decoding the manual transmission I found in a 60 corvette I just purchased.Casting # GM5 3858988 A317, side cover GM4 2868892, with a tailshaft # 8880042 A277. It is cast iron. I don't think it's corvette , But what is it???? Thank You Tom Cacace

    Tom------

I think that you're reading the numbers incorrectly. This is easy to do with casting numbers, especially for certain numbers. Anyway, I suspect that the main case is GM #3858986, the side cover is GM #3858992, and the extension housing GM #3860042. If so, the transmission is a 3 speed Saginaw manual transmission originally used for most 1966 and 1967 Chevrolet applications, including Corvette. The dates are consistent with an early 1967-manufactured transmission.
