    Original water pump?

How can I tell if the water pump I have is an original and not a replacement, I already know it is not correct for my car but I am going to sell it and want to make sure it is original. cast # I can see is 3839175.

    Thanks,

    Jerry

    Jerry-----

I'm not sure what you mean by "original" and "replacement". If it's not correct for your car, then it can't be "original". The terms "original" and "replacement" are really quite nebulous.

The GM #3839175 is a waterpump casting which was used for a very short period of time in PRODUCTION. Of course, SERVICE pumps were manufactured during that period of time. The castings, themselves, would be absolutely identical. There were no dates used on the 3839175 castings, so that's not an issue, at all.

Often times, Chevrolet PRODUCTION water pumps will have "4 drilled and tapped hole" flanges, while SERVICE pumps will have "8 drilled and tapped hole" patterns. However, I don't think that this practice was generally used during the time that the 3839175 casting was in use. However, rebuilders often use the "8 drilled and tapped hole" flanges. So, the chances are, if it has such a flange, it's been rebuilt. The casting, itself, though is really all that's important from a restoration perspective.

The GM #3839175 casting is not reproduced, as far as I know, so I don't think that there's any way that possibility could enter the picture.

      Jerry,

What year is your car? Early or late production?

Sorry it is a 66 bb but has a replacement motor currently in it, I am putting the original back in it now.

          Thanks,
          Jerry

Ok, thanks Jerry. I thought you may be refering to a 63 or 64 and I was going to suggest checking to see if indeed the pump that you have was correct for it but since it's a 66 BB, that's a whole different deal.
