    surface frame rust.

I a have a fairly low milage (20k) 73 vette and I want to keep it as correct as posible. The car has sat indoors since 1990 and has surface rust on the frame. Will steam cleaning help this any at all ? (i was told it would), or is there any other products to help remove and protect the frame. I live in Texas so I am not worried about it rotting out, just want to preserve and make the underside look as nice as possible.

    thanks for any input.

Take a look at this stuff.

It's a waxy film. I've used it, and it works great. Hardly noticeable.

      Danny,

I'm not sure what type of results you're looking for, but if it is truly just light, surface rust, and you just want to regain the clean, black original look, you can use one of the spray products that is designed to be applied to lightly rusted surfaces. It will turn the rust colored areas black and give a nice overall look to your frame. This requires only minimal preparation with something like a rough scotch brite pad to remove any loose surface rust. Once you get into sanding and repainting areas, you'll find there's really no place to stop. In your dry climate, if the car is garaged, the surface rust should not reappear even with the use of normal spray paint brands.

Steam cleaning, by itself, will not remove any significant amount of rust, especially surface rust. Actually, it might even promote some small amount of additional surface rust. However, you do need to use something like steam cleaning in order to prepare the frame for further chemical rust removal and/or rust conversion treatments.
