Re: What About the 15W Part?

Duke, Is it necessary to run a "flush" when converting from spark ign. oil to diesel?

No, the base stocks are similar. The main difference is a higher concentration of the critical additives in CI-4 versus SL or the new SM, which has even less of the good stuff than SL.

Re: What About the 15W Part?

How about using a regular dino 5-30 SM and 15-40 CI-4 mixed half and half for use in our catalytic converter cars - the benefit being to 'boost' the additive package and maintain an average oil viscosity of around 10-30 .? . . Seems most manufacturers recommend not using oil heavier than 10-30 in modern day cars.

What to look for at the store and where?

I have read several of these post on oil, and I think I understand what you are saying, but if I go to the store, will I find diesel oil marked? How can I even tell if my store offers it?

I haven't got the foggiest idea, where you live, where you shop, or what the stores you shop carry.

All HD diesel engine oils carry "CI-4" on the API service category label. Read some labels. The major national brands are Chevron Delo, Shell Rotella, and Mobil Delvac. Most auto parts stores carry at least one of the above in in gallon jugs.

Costco carries Delo, but you have to buy a case of six gallon jugs.'

Go to any truck stop or heavy truck dealer. Probably a better price at a truck parts store. Like Duke said look for the CI4 designation on the cap or label. Most say compatible with Detroit, Cat, Cummins, etc
