    C3 speedometer doodad

i have a 73 4-speed car with the original muncie. on the right side of the tranny is a gadget (some kind of transducer i guess) that the speedo cable hooks into. obviously geared to calibrate speedo guage. my question is this, the original doodad has come apart and no longer works, is there any place i can get a replacement or have this one repaired?? thanks in advance for any input, rick

    Re: C3 speedometer doodad

I was able to get one from a GM dealer a few years ago. Make sure the ratio is the same and both ends need a square pin that is a different part number. I hope Joe helps you on this.

My doodad stopped working some years ago also. (no jokes please).

I found that the difficulty was simply a sleeve on the input side had come loose allowing the doodad to disengage from the transmission output shaft. I pushed it back into place and dribbled some crazy glue between the housing and sleeve. Works fine to this day.

If unable to obtain from your local GM dealer try your local heavy duty truck dealer (Peterbilt, Kenworth, etc). Some of the dealers will stock a kit that they can build you an adapter from. They will need the ratio (should be stamped on housing) and the tip sizes. The kit is made by the S. S. White Co.

Rick, have you done a search of the various Corvette catalogs? I don't know for sure, but I think I remember this unit when I was working on my 72 transmission.

Isn't that one of the verses from Camptown Ladies?

              You know:
The Campptown ladies sing this song,
              Doo-da, Doo-da
The Camptown racetrack's five miles long
              Oh, de doo-da day

Sorry, been a long day and humor helps.
              Gary
btw, I have this on my car and only certain gear ratios had the unit to meke the speedo read correctly but I don't know the proper term. I sure one of the parts gurus will jump in here and tell us.

I checked my stock and have a drive adapter GM#1565202 ratio 1:0 .733 also the square pin is GM 00867209 and you also need GM#88961013 sleeve to adapt the adapter to the square pin. As I recall you need 1 sleeve and two pins but better order two of each if the parts man don't know. I had to order three times to get all three as my GM parts man had no idea I needed the other parts but GM had them. My book shows 72's need a drive adapter only with 4.11 gear. The 73 part# is 165211 and I have no ratio for this one but may help in your search.

                  Re: C3 speedometer doodad

Lyle, thanks for the info........my car has a 3:36 gear, i have the old doodad,(still on the tranny, i sorta pressed it back together, and it worked for about 100mi) i need to pull it off, and see if i can get the numbers off of it. so you are saying that GM may still have these parts available? is the entire DOODAD called a drive adapter, or just part of the doodad called a drive adapter? (wanting to appear half way intelligent when i go to the parts counter, LOL) rick....i just doubt that "doodad" will be listed in parts book!

                    Rick

The main part is a drive adapter. What tires and rear gear may be why you need drive the adapter on a 72 as 73 had radials and needed the adapter.

                      Re: C3 speedometer doodad

GM called it an "adapter assembly"; speedometer shops call it a "ratio box".

                        Hi John

No big deal but my GM box called it a drive adapter. Either name should get better results than doodad.
