Re: 66 Holley Carburetor Question
Daniel,
I have a list 3139-1 dated 651 with the same circular boss in the secondary bowl. The 3139-1 was for a 65-66 Chevrolet and Chevelle 396. In the Holley Illustrated Parts catalog the current part number for a secondary bowl on a 3367 or a 3139-1 and 3140 is 34R5981A, the same for each. I have a couple of secondary bowls from a 3810 and a 3918 (Crysler-Dodge 440) and both have casting numbers inside of 34R2460 but no circular boss (although they have different part numbers).
Looks like I am as confused as you, maybe someone will chime in on this.

Re: 66 Holley Carburetor Question
Daniel----
The original secondary fuel bowl for your 3884505 carburetor was GM #3881428. I believe that this is a fuel bowl also known as Holley 34R-2460.
In May, 1969, the GM #3881428 fuel bowl was discontinued and replaced by GM #3966916. I believe that this is the fuel bowl known as Holley 34R-2460-B.
In Holley "parlance", the suffix codes following a part number represent a revision of the original part. Both alpha characters (i.e. -A, -B, -C, etc.) or numerals (i.e. -1, -2, -3, etc.) are used. Usually, the revised part will still SERVICE the original application for the major part number. However, the part will be either revised in some way to improve it or revised in some way to work for an expanded number of applications (e.g. applications that were released after the original application for the part).
In this case, I expect that the revised part and part number was issued to reflect, at least, the addition of the unused boss (next to the "Holley" name). For some other application, this boss must have been used in some way. I don't think that it was ever used for a Corvette application, but it may have been used for some other Chevrolet application (not too likely in my opinion) or some other non-GM application (much more likely).
So, I expect that your carburetor had the secondary fuel bowl replaced on it for whatever reason a long time ago. Even the 3966916 has been GM-discontinued for over 25 years, although Holley may have supplied it much later than GM did. Perhaps, even still. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 66 Holley Carburetor Question
My Holley 2818-1 dated March 1965 has the round boss in the rear bowl. FWIW, two years ago I sent it to a very reputable restorer, whom most of you know, for a complete overhaul and restoration. The old rear bowl was dented, and was replaced with a new (NOS??) bowl with the boss, as part of the refurb. I do not know whether the old bowl was original to the carburetor. I cannot say, for sure, whether or not the boss appeared on original float bowls in 3/65, but I have seen more 2818-1 carbs WITH the boss than without.
I hope that I can continue to attest to the integrity, as well as the talent of this carb rebuilder. If any of you have a known original 2818-1 Holley WITHOUT the boss, then please let me (us) know.
