I am trying to understand what a correct ballast resistor looks like for my 1963 fuel injected engine. Judges say "No Tab". I now have a collection of resistors and fear that the correct one is not in it.

Re: 1963 ballast resistor with a tab?
Randy,
About a month ago, someone posted a pic of the original resistor on their basically unrestored car. (67 if I remember correctly) It even had the remains of some of the factory applied sealer on the metal frame and mounting screw of the resistor which would tell us that it was indeed the original. It did not have a tab.
Unless someone can absolutely prove, one way or the other that these originally came with or without the tab, I would have to say that either would have to be accepted. At this point, I don't think anything is carved in stone as far as judging is concerned. At least I hope not.- Top

Re: 1963 ballast resistor with a tab?
I would like to see a picture of a resistor with a "tab" since I do not know were it is supposed to be located or what it does. I have a resistor in my collection with something that looks like a tab carved out of the bracket that holds the resistor and is bolted to the car, it is even bent out from the ceramic and seems very "tab like". Still confused.
Where did you see the picture that was posted?- Top

I'll look in the archives. The search words "resistor" and "tab" should find it.- Top

Re: 1963 ballast resistor with a tab?
Here's a link to a pic that Gerald Fuccillo posted on 14 Oct. The tab, or lack thereof, would have been on the far right side of the metal part of the bracket, just right of the mounting screw. On a resistor that does have the tab, it would have been probably 1/8" X 1/32". Just saw John Hinckleys post on the same 14 Oct date and his original did not have a tab either. Hope this link works.- Top

Re: 1963 ballast resistor with a tab?
The newest NCRS Judging Manual for 1963-1964 say's the ballest resistor should have a tab. I know that at the last two NCRS Meets I made a deduction for no tab. I do believe at by 1967 there may not have been a tab, and this is based on my personal feeling seeing a few orignal 67 car unrestored.- Top

Re: 1963 ballast resistor with a tab?
The only reference my 4th edition 63-64 JG manual has to a tab is "The L76 and L84 engine resistor has a black dot on one end. The metal is cadmium or zinc plated, and the attaching ear is stamped Delco Remy." So far so good. "the attaching TAB on original resistors has small notches on the outside corners" I have a rounded end...perhaps they should have deducted for no "notches"- Top
