    Date code on a Master Cylinder

    Where is the date code location and how do you break down the code on a master cylinder on a 69 corvette with manual brakes? David

    David;

    A very good technical article on this subject was covered in a couple of past issues of the Corvette Restorer magazine. I would contact Eric Mortimer and request a back issue. These magazines are extremely informative.

        Back Issues of the Corvette Restorer

        NCRS has not sold back issues of The Restorer (or Drivelines) for about seven years. We do sell a CD with the trchnical stories from past restorers, however.

          Re: Date code on a Master Cylinder

          look at the machined surface (the flat area) where the brake lines screw into the master cylinder. There will be a Julian date code stamped - day of the year and year. Example 2119 is the 211th day of year ending in 9. Some have the year first, some have the year last, example 9211 or 2119.

          Beware, there is somebody on e-bay who takes later master cylinders and machines the flat area on the nose and restamps them PG or DC - but then again, he does a good enough job that it's hard to spot it as a restamp.

          Hope this helps,
          Mark

            Thanks Mark, curently there is one on ebay, here is the link:

            I do not understand the stamping. Does the OD8 that he speaks of stand for the year 1968 and the 34 stand for the 3rd day in February?

            Thanks
            David

              ...I thought it was recognized that "not all" had dates prior to 1970. My March 19, 1968 Corvette(VIN #14222) does not.

                68-72 judging does not look for date codes. Some are absent. It is very hard to read them off the car let alone on the car with brake lines in the way

                  that's the casting info, the machining date code is on the machined round boss you can just see in the lower right corner of the photo where the brake line attaches.
