    1963 Breaks

I have 1 1963 coupe that I restored about 20 years ago. The car has Z06 breaks on it but was not originally delivered that way. I would like to put the car back to stock but I'm having trouble locating backing plates, at a resonable price. I was under the impression that the front end on the '63 Corvette was a take off of the '63 Chevrolet therefor the backing plates from the Chevrolet would work. I'm not sure of this. I remember the '63 Chevrolet having 14" wheels. I tried to cross reference part numbers at the dealership withou success. Does anyone know what the real story is??

    Thanks for any help.

    Jim-----

The drum brake backing plates for the FRONT of 63-64 Corvettes were the same as those used on the front of 63-64 passenger cars. The rear backing plates were unique to 63-64 Corvettes and were NOT shared with any other passenger car. The original part numbers are as follows:

    front, left----GM #3820273--SERVICE after 11/67--GM #3858825--discontinued 1/74

    front, right---GM #3820274--SERVICE after 8/67--GM #3858826--discontinued 9/76

    rear, left-----GM #3847719----discontinued 3/72

    rear, right----GM #3847720----discontinued 4/75

Finding the correct backing plates for your car will be no problem, at all. Just advertise in the Driveline that you have a set of Z-06 backing plates that you want to trade for a set of standard backing plates. You'll likely have a set before you know what happens. In fact, if you advertise that you have a set of Z-06 backing plates that you want to trade for TWO sets of standard backing plates, you will probably get that, too.

How soon you want to trade? I have a pair of '63 passenger car backing plates and I think I might have a pair of Corvette backing plates.

There is a difference. There is a slight diference in the shape of the "ledge" for want of a better description. It doesn't change the functionality and I doubt anyone knows the difference, since they are supposed to be the same.

As soon as I dig them out, I'll get a photo of each and show the differences.

          Jim,

The last set of backing plates for a 63 ZO-6 I had sold for $1000.00 each so don't be crazy enough to trade for a set of worn out passenger car backing plates. Be patient, buy you a good set of backing plates for your 63 and then sell the 63 ZO-6 plates on e-bay for a handsome profit.

Your are making some members on this board slip and fall in their saliva!

          Regards,

          JR

Re: 1963 Breaks - now JR

An item is only worth what someone is willing to give for it. Or what someone needs to get for it.

Right now, he needs some '63 backing plates.

I'll dig out the plates and take some shots of them. Then he can decide if he wants the passenger plates or Corvette plates. They are fairly easy to come by as far as price.
