    C1 Window Felts

On a 1957 Corvette is it possible to remove the outer molding reveal and window felt without having to remove the window? If I remove the lower window stop, and roll the window all the way down, the two aft screws of the molding reveal are accessible, but not the front one. It appears that the only way to get to this screw is to remove the window. Is there a secret that someone could share that would spare my removing the window in order to replace an outer window felt? Also, if it becomes necessary to remove the window, can the window be removed without having to remove the window post? Thanks so much, Wayne.

I took the windows out of my 57 to change the felts.

I had to remove my window in my 56 to do what you describe. Sorry. Be patient if you have not done this before. I think the back of the window needs to come out first. This operation is not described in detail in ST-12 but there is a picture showing this portion of the operation. Reverse to install.

I know tht on my 62's, with the window rolled up enough that I can use the larger access hole in the door, that I've used a long extension with an elbow and socket, and have removed many of those without removing the window. The key was to move the window up and down to facilitate my angles for each retaining nut at the top lip of the door.

I agree with Mike. I have allways removed mine by moving the window down about 1/4 of the way and then reaching behind the window and using either a socket and universal joint, or a stubby wrench. If you position yourself just right, you can look through the glass from the inside, and see the nut and stud, and you will have no problem getting the socket over the nut. It beats trying to do it by feel!
I have tried to remove the window with the reveal and fuzzies in place, and I was afraid I was going to break something getting it out! There is so little clearance to begin with, and having an additional 1/4" of stuff in the way makes it tough.

            Duh!

I forgot we were talking about earlier models where the reveal moulding is screwed to a retainer plate. I would still think that you could still remove the nuts that hold the retainer plate in place and remove the reveal moulding with the retainer still attached.

Allen, you're right about the lack of detail in the ST-12 on this operation. It looks as if I'll have to remove the window to get to the molding reveal. When you removed the window on your 56, was it necessary to remove the window post? Any other tips would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Wayne

I've done it a couple of times. The last time I removed the post. While I had it off I sent the post off for replating. As stated I left it in the first time. I think I loosened the rear window guide (my name for it). I may have removed it. I believe one brings up the rear of the window very high at the same time letting the front go down. Once geting the rear bottom corner of the window out it gets to be intuitive. Getting the wheel out of the front guide is the key. Also I think I completely removed the screws from the window lift mechanism to aid things. I also may have loosened the front guide also. You need two people to do this without getting frustrated. Having a patient wife to hold this and that helps.
                Hope I remembered things correctly.
